Accessibility

Is UTA Accessible for people with disabilities?

UTA is committed to providing services to all customers, including passengers with disabilities. UTA’s entire fleet is accessible and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. In addition, UTA offers curb-to-curb paratransit service for people whose functional ability prevents them from using regular UTA services. You can call the UTA Mobility Center for more information at 801-287-2263.

Bikes on Transit

What do I do with my bike on the bus?

All UTA buses have bike racks on the front of them. To learn how to use the bike racks, click here.

Remember, when you use the bike racks, let the driver know you have a bike on the rack when exiting the bus, so he or she will wait for you to remove your bike from the rack.

Can I take my bike on FrontRunner?

Bikes are a great way to travel that first mile to your FrontRunner station or that final mile to your destination.

You will see some newer model FrontRunner railcars have a bicycle logo on the side of the car. This is how you can identify which cars has bike racks. Once the car has stopped and you let others off, enter these cars with your bicycle and place it in the rack.

You cannot take your bike on the older “Comet” railcars. Also, you are not allowed to travel with your gas powered bicycle, scooters or motorcycles on FrontRunner.

Can I take my bike on TRAX?

UTA encourages you to take your bike on TRAX to travel that final mile to your destination.

On the Red and Green lines, look for the bike icon on the platform. When the train stops, board at the nearest door and look for the open spot for bikes in the car. There are hooks for hanging your bike on most newer-model trains, or you can stand and hold your bike. We ask that you steady and stay with your bike as you travel.

On the Blue Line, you will need to board at the front or rear of the car. Since these are older trains, you will need to carry your bike up the two steps to get on the train. Again, we ask that you steady and stay with your bike as you travel.

You are not allowed to travel with your gas powered bicycle, scooters or motorcycles on TRAX.

Bus

What types of bus service does UTA offer?

UTA offers many different ways to get around:

  • Fixed bus service goes on the same route regularly.
  • Flex bus runs on a fixed bus route but can deviate or leave the route up to ¾ of a mile for an extra $1.25 if a passenger requests.
  • Ski bus is a special service that runs in the winter to area ski resorts.
  • Paratransit is a service for door-to-door service for riders with mobility issues.
  • UTA’s bus rapid transit (BRT) service operates on a set line with special stops, like a light rail line but with a bus instead of a train.

What do the route numbers on UTA buses mean?

Each bus route is assigned a unique number and name. Learning the approximate location and direction of each bus route is pretty simple, once you know what the route numbers mean.

  • 001-199 Salt Lake County routes run east-west
  • 200-299 Salt Lake County routes run north-south
  • 300-399 Routes are designated as “express” routes, meaning they have limited stops
  • 400-499 Routes are intercounty, so they go through two or more counties
  • 500-599 Neighborhood routes serving specific neighborhoods
  • F Routes – These are “Flex” routes that travel a fixed route, but can deviate up to ¾ mile at for $1.25 upon passenger request
  • 600-699 Routes serving just Weber and/or Davis County
  • 800-800 Utah County routes
  • 900-999 Ski buses or seasonal routes
  • The printed schedules and online schedules list the major destinations or cross streets.

Fares

How much does riding UTA cost?

UTA offers a variety of fare options ranging from a one-way trip to a premium monthly pass. There are discounted fares for participating organizations, low income, youth, seniors, and persons with a disability. UTA also operates a free fare zone in downtown Salt Lake City. For detailed pricing options, visit the current fares page.

How do I pay?

Fares can be purchased online, at your nearest pass sales outlet, at ticket machines or by using the electronic fare readers located at TRAX and FrontRunner stations. You must have exact change for bus service if you do not purchase an advance pass because bus cash fares are collected in fare boxes located at the front of each bus.

FrontRunner

How do I know which direction the FrontRunner train is going?

For reference, the locomotive is always going to be facing northbound, followed by the “Comet”, then the newer model railcars. The train operator will always stop his train so that the newer cars are at the south end of the platform.

Signs near the platform help you know which side of the platform to wait on for your desired train. If you have any questions about which train to get on, look for the train host who will be in the last car on the south end of the train.

Transfers

What is a transfer?

A transfer allows passengers to complete a one-way trip using combinations of UTA bus routes and rail lines within two hours from the time a ticket is issued or a contactless credit card (FAREPAY card or debit/credit card) is tapped on. The transfer will allow the passenger to board a second bus or TRAX going in the same direction to complete their trip.

Transfers are free for regular fixed bus routes (non-express routes) and TRAX, provided they are used within two hours of purchase. Express routes that are numbered with an X, like 2X.

When transferring from one service type to another, you will be charged only for the most expensive service used.

How do I request a transfer if I’m starting on a UTA bus when paying cash?

You’ll need to get a transfer slip from the bus operator. The transfer slip is good for two hours. All you do is pay your fare in the fare box. Then, ask the operator for a transfer slip. This is a paper slip that you will keep until you arrive at your destination.

If you transfer to another non-express bus, simply show the slip to the operator upon entry into your next bus. You will need to enter the bus at the front, so you can show the slip to the operator. If you transfer to an express bus, you will need to pay for the full fare for the express bus.

If you transfer to TRAX, just board the train and remember to keep your transfer slip. If you get approached by a fare inspector, you will need to show him or her your transfer slip as proof of payment.

If you transfer to FrontRunner, you will need to buy a separate ticket for FrontRunner when you get to the station. You will receive a transfer credit for the amount you originally paid for your ticket. Just follow the directions on the ticket machine.

How do I transfer if I start on TRAX when paying cash?

When you pay for your fare at a TRAX station using a ticket machine, you will get a ticket and a receipt. The ticket is good for a transfer to a regular fixed bus route or another TRAX vehicle within two hours of your purchase.

If you transfer to a non-express bus you will need to show your ticket to the bus driver when you board.

If you transfer to another TRAX vehicle, just board the train you need. Make sure you keep your ticket and receipt with you. If you get approached by a fare inspector, you will need to show this ticket to the inspector as proof of payment. If you transfer to an express bus, you will need to pay for the full fare for the express bus.

If you transfer to FrontRunner, you will need to buy a separate ticket for FrontRunner when you get to the station. You will receive a transfer credit for the amount you originally paid for your ticket. Just follow the directions on the ticket machine.

What about transfers when using a FAREPAY card?

When you are using a FAREPAY card, transferring is a little different.

By paying with a FAREPAY card, there is no need to ask for a transfer. Tap on when entering the bus or at the TRAX or FrontRunner station. Once you tap off, the system will automatically apply transfer credits for all transfers you make within a two hour window.
