Reflecting on 25 Years of TRAX
TRAX has come a long way since the opening of the Blue Line in 1999. The original line, which ran between downtown Salt Lake City and the Sandy area was a major step forward in the region’s commitment to sustainable, efficient public transportation. Over the years, TRAX has expanded both in service areas and ridership. In 2023, UTA moved over 10.6 million Utahns on light rail, highlighting the essential role it plays in connecting communities and providing an eco-friendly alternative to driving.
What’s Next for TRAX?
New South Jordan Downtown Station
The South Jordan Downtown Station will open on April Change Day 2025 and will deliver riders to the new home stadium of the Salt Lake Bees. This new station will connect the southernmost parts of the TRAX network to the heart of South Jordan, providing more direct access for commuters in this rapidly growing area.
Red Line Realignment
By 2032, the Red Line is expected to be realigned to include new service through the Granary District to Ballpark Station.
New TRAX Orange Line
By 2032, the Orange Line is expected to be completed, which will connect Salt Lake City International Airport directly to the University of Utah. The Orange Line will increase service through downtown, along North Temple and 400 S., further expanding the network and increasing reliability and connectivity.
Fleet Modernization and Technology Upgrades
The TRAX fleet is evolving to better serve passengers. The UTA Board of Trustees approved a contract with Utah-based Stadler to build up to 80 new light rail cars which will have low-floor, all-accessible boarding.
Along with fleet upgrades, UTA is also improving the efficiency of traffic signal priority (TSP) technology. TSP allows TRAX trains to communicate with traffic signals, giving trains priority at intersections. By reducing wait times at traffic lights, TSP technology will improve efficiency, especially during peak travel times, resulting in faster, more reliable service.

As the Salt Lake Valley continues to grow, UTA remains committed to providing sustainable, efficient transportation options that meet the needs of our community. The upcoming expansions and upgrades will ensure TRAX continues to be a key component in shaping the region’s transportation.
