Beginning August 18, 2024, the FAREPAY Card and Reduced Fare FAREPAY Card will switch to a fare capping system with daily and weekly maximum charges.

For premium service (FrontRunner, Ski Bus, and Express Bus), the daily maximum is $10, and the weekly premium maximum fare is $40.
The Reduced Fare FAREPAY Card is available to youth, seniors, people with disabilities, and people with qualifying income.
Reduced Fare FAREPAY Card users will be charged $1 per trip. Charges will be capped at $2 per day and $8 per week for local bus, BRT, UTA On Demand, S-Line, and TRAX. This fare maintains the current reduced-fare rate and offers a higher discount than the monthly pass or cash options. For premium service (FrontRunner, Ski Bus, and Express Bus), the daily reduced fare maximum is $4 per day and the weekly maximum is $16.
Paratransit service is not part of the fare capping system.
First-Generation FAREPAY cards
UTA is replacing parts of the electronic fare collection system beginning December 2024. If you have a first-generation (Gen 1) FAREPAY Card, it will no longer work on our new fares system. UTA will replace your Gen 1 card at no cost. Please contact UTA to replace your Gen 1 card before December 2024.
Check the serial number on the back of your FAREPAY Card:

To replace a regular FAREPAY Card, use one of these options:
- Go to a UTA Customer Service location. A customer service agent will immediately issue you a new card at no charge.
- Call Customer Service at 801-RIDE-UTA (743-3882) to have a customer service agent send you a new card in the mail. While your new card is in the mail, your Gen 1 card will be deactivated and will not work. The new card will be activated and ready to use when you receive it.
- Purchase a new FAREPAY Card online for $3 (nonrefundable replacement fee).
- Submit an online form and we will mail you a new card at no charge. While your new card is in the mail, your Gen 1 card will be deactivated and will not work. The new card will be activated and ready to use when you receive it.
To replace a Reduced Fare FAREPAY Card, you will need to reapply for reduced fare. You can do this in two ways:
- Go to any Customer Service location. A customer service agent will help you reapply. If you qualify, they will issue you a new card immediately at no charge.
- Reapply through the Reduced Fare FAREPAY Card online portal. If you qualify, a new card will be mailed to you. While your new card is in the mail, your Gen 1 card will be deactivated and will not work. The new card will be activated and ready to use when you receive it.
As always, remember to tap your card when you board and exit the bus or train. If you use UTA On Demand, make sure to update your FAREPAY Card info in the app.
Tap and Go and Save
There’s a more convenient way to pay your fare: buy a prepaid, reloadable FAREPAY Card. No need to carry exact change or wait at the ticket machine - simply load money to your card prior to your trip, tap it on the card reader, and ride. Not only is the FAREPAY Card an easy way to pay, but it also saves you money!
FAREPAY cardholders save 20% off local bus, TRAX, S-Line, and Express Bus fare and up to 20% off FrontRunner fare (FrontRunner savings vary between 17 and 20%, depending on distance traveled). FAREPAY Cards cannot be used on Paratransit. FAREPAY Cards can be used to pay for Ski Bus but do not receive discounts on these services.

How to Use FAREPAY
- Activate your card by following instructions in packaging for cards purchased online. Retailers activate cards at checkout for in-store purchases. There is a one-time card issuance fee of $3.
- Create a web account at farepay.rideuta.com and add your card to the account for loss and theft protection as well as for convenient account management.
- Tap card on card reader when boarding, exiting or transferring between UTA bus, TRAX, FrontRunner and street car services. When transferring between TRAX lines (i.e. Blue Line to Red Line), only tap card at first and last stations. Card readers are located inside buses near doors and at UTA rail stations.
- Remember to Tap Off your card so that you get charged the correct amount. If you forget to Tap Off, you will be charged for the maximum FrontRunner trip ($8.00 with FAREPAY promotion).
- If you have other contactless credit cards in your wallet, be sure to take out your FAREPAY Card when tapping it on a card reader. This will prevent your other contactless credit cards from being charged.
- Use FAREPAY Card for fare payment only after activation and when the card reader has given a green light. If the card reader gives a red light, card is not valid for fare payment and another form of payment is required.
- Present card to UTA police when asked to present proof of fare.
